Zoo_3

Going to the zoo really piqued my interest in wildlife. I ended up going home and watching documentaries on the animal kingdom; the main one that caught my attention was ‘Our Planet’.

The way the animals were filmed in their natural habitat made them look like super heroes. They looked otherworldly and mystical. This concept is what I decided to explore more.

I did a quick sketch to see how I could draw the animals to push forward my narrative.

I used a mixture of colouring pencils and fine-liners to achieve this outcome and I really did like how the bright colours made the snake look; the only problem I had was with the background and figuring out what to do with it. I decided to do a quick test with the same background but with different mediums.

From top right to top left the order is: Colouring pencils, Markers, Watercolour and a mixture of them all. I thought that the colouring pencil one (top right) was the most eye-catching but felt that placing it behind a colourful drawing of an animal might make it look too busy and chaotic. The marker one (bottom right) was my least favourite as it came out quite patchy. After doing this, I decided that combining all 3 mediums would work best for the background. To test this theory, I created another background drawing that included a landscape.

Doing this confirmed my theory.
